Avatar Categorization
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper examines the various modes of designing video game avatars. The purpose is to establish an operational model for categorizing the avatars’ design. Within a theoretical framework raised by Marie-Laure Ryan and Murray Smith I will establish two continua, which, merged together, lead to twin axes that can be used to describe certain archetypes in avatar design. This paper examines typical avatar design and provides theory for different design models. Author

Virtual Gender Identity: The Linguistic Assimilation to Gendered Avatars in Computer-Mediated Communication
This research examined how individuals’ gendered avatar might alter their use of gender-based language (i.e., references to emotion, apologies, and tentative language) in text-based computer-mediated communication. Specifically, the experiment tested if men and women would linguistically assimilate a virtual gender identity intimated by randomly assigned gendered avatars (either matched or mism...
متن کاملCategory Processing and the human likeness dimension of the Uncanny Valley Hypothesis: Eye-Tracking Data
The Uncanny Valley Hypothesis (Mori, 1970) predicts that perceptual difficulty distinguishing between a humanlike object (e.g., lifelike prosthetic hand, mannequin) and its human counterpart evokes negative affect. Research has focused on affect, with inconsistent results, but little is known about how objects along the hypothesis' dimension of human likeness (DHL) are actually perceived. This ...
متن کاملAspects of Interface Agents: Avatar, Assistant and Actor
This paper introduces the interface agent research project being carryied out at ATR Media Integration & Communications Research Labs. We are interested in virtual interface agents to support human creative activities by mediating between human users and computer cyberspace. In this paper, we categorize interface agents into three types; avatars, assistants and actors based on their functionali...
متن کاملThe Role of Avatar in Interactive Fictional World of Video Games
In third-person video games, players are able to move and progress in the interactive world of the game while watching their avatar from an external point of view. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of avatar in the interactive imaginary world of video games using double vision theory. This article is based on descriptive-analytical methods and the use of library data and imag...
متن کاملThe Marginal: A Game for Modeling Players’ Perceptions of Gradient Membership in Avatar Categories
We encounter the results of category formation every day, from demographic categories like race and gender, to role-playing-game classes like “fighter” or “mage”. Category membership is often not simply based on the possession of discrete properties but instead constructed from and reflect the highly nuanced relationships (gradience) between members and bestexample individuals called “prototype...
